Miss Young's Schedule

Where in the world is Miss Young?  This gives a general overview of the groups that I instruct and support for the 2011-2012 school year.

Monday

Purple Sage for a math intervention.

Purple Sage with the 3rd Grade Advanced Math Group - I will be supporting the 3rd Grade team by instructing these gifted and advanced students with the Envision math curriculum.  It was determined that these students would be instructed in the Envision topics at a pace that is accelerated to match their learning needs.  This group also meets on Wednesday morning for instruction.

Purple Sage with the 2nd Grade Advanced Reading Group - This group meets weekly to work on developing deeper comprehension and writing skills.  These 2nd grade readers' learning targets are focused on the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) which put a strong emphasis on nonfiction reading and writing.

Purple Sage with the 3rd Grade Advanced Reading Group - These advanced readers meet daily with Mrs. Craw.  I work with this group on Monday's to support their learning targets with co-teaching and model lessons.  This group is also working on literature and nonfiction standards from the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

Middleton Heights Elementary with the 2nd Grade Advanced Math Group - This group of students work with me weekly to develop mathematical problem solving skills.  We are using learning targets from the CCSS in math as well as the strategies from the state Math Thinking Initiative.  Most of the problems these students will be solving have a real world basis.

Middleton Heights Elementary with the 3rd Grade Advanced Math Group - This group of students work with me weekly to develop mathematical problem solving skills.  We are using learning targets from the CCSS in math as well as the strategies from the state Math Thinking Initiative.  Our goal is to prove this group with differentiated opportunities within their grade level topic to deepen their understanding of mathematics in the world.

Tuesday

Middleton Heights with the 3rd Grade Advanced Reading Intervention - This group of students works daily with Mrs. Maxwell for reading intervention.  I support this group on Tuesdays and through collaboration and planning with Mrs. Maxwell.  The learning targets for this group come from the CCSS for reading.  There will be a strong emphasis on higher levels of comprehension and sharing thinking through writing.  To support this work a number of strategies are used including a resource from the College of William and Mary entitled Jacob's Ladders.  There will be a focus toward nonfiction after the Christmas Break.

Middleton Heights with the 2nd Grade Advanced Reading Intervention - I support Mrs. Forse as she instructs this group of students daily.  Mrs. Forse has long range learning targets for this group of gifted and advanced readers from the CCSS.  The primary focus to is help this group, who are fluent readers, become more aware of their thinking and understanding of texts.  We will also be spending a large percentage of the time helping this group of student understand how to navigate the features and structures of nonfiction texts.

Middleton Heights with 3rd Grade Advanced Spellers - The third grade team at Middleton Heights is differentiating for the needs of all of their students in spelling.  Using the Words Their Way program, the teachers assessed students at the beginning of the year to determine their spelling levels and skills.  I support this group by taking the advanced spellers once a week for instruction in the Syllables and Affixes stage.  Their classroom teachers provide the assessment and practice portions throughout the week.

Testing and paperwork - A couple of hours in the afternoon is used for formal testing of new referrals, parent meetings, planning and paperwork.

Wednesday

Back to Purple Sage for Math Intervention and 3rd Grade Advanced Math Group - See Monday.

Purple Sage for 2nd Grade Advanced Math Group - This group of students works with me on Wednesdays to develop skills at math problem solving.  The students are learning to read problems to determine important information from "distracting" information and learning to solve problems using strategies to show their thinking.  Their learning targets for this time are coming from the CCSS for math and the Math Thinking Initiative.

Thursday

Mill Creek with the 3rd Grade Advanced Reading Intervention - This group of students works daily with Mrs. Mitchell for reading intervention.  I support this group on Thursdays and through collaboration and planning with Mrs. Mitchell.

Mill Creek with the 2nd Grade Advanced Reading Intervention - I support Mr. Myers as he instructs this group of students daily.  Mr. Myers has long range learning targets for this group of gifted and advanced readers from the CCSS.  The primary focus to is help this group, who are fluent readers, become more aware of their thinking and understanding of texts.  We will also be spending a large percentage of the time helping this group of student understand how to navigate the features and structures of nonfiction texts.

Mill Creek with the 2nd Grade Advanced Math students - This group of students has a split time with me because of specials.  We work together from 12:00-12:30 and then again from 1:30-2:00.  Learning targets for this group come from the CCSS and the Math Thinking Initiative.  The main goal is that this group has a good grasp of large numbers and place value and that when they problem solve they have a strategy to show their thinking.  We also want them to be thinking about the reasonableness of their answers.

Mill Creek with the 3rd Grade Advanced Math students - This group of students work with me weekly to develop mathematical problem solving skills.  We are using learning targets from the CCSS in math as well as the strategies from the state Math Thinking Initiative.  Our goal is to prove this group with differentiated opportunities within their grade level topic to deepen their understanding of mathematics in the world.

Friday

On Friday Mrs. Ingersoll and I are at Middleton Middle School.  We are working with teams of teachers to differentiate for gifted and advanced students in their regular classes.  In the near future we will be supporting the work of the math teachers as they collaborate on the CCSS math standards and district curriculum with their math coach, a professor from NNU.
